Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova is not happy with the way U.S representatives and athletes have been calling the Brittney Griner detainment as illegal.

“If a U.S. citizen was taken in connection with the fact that she was smuggling drugs, and she does not deny this, then this should be commensurate with our Russian, local laws, and not with those adopted in San Francisco, New York and Washington,” Zakharova said.

Griner was arrested for the first time in February when investigators said they discovered hashish oil-laced vape cartridges in her luggage at a Moscow airport. She has been detained in Russia since then and faces up to ten years in jail. Her trial will resume the following week.

As previously reported, Russia could be willing to exchange Griner for convicted arms dealer Viktor Bout. Former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson is reported to be working on Griner’s release.
