According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns “will consider acquiring Garoppolo if Deshaun Watson’s six-game suspension significantly increases upon appeal.” Garoppolo is coming off shoulder surgery, and 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan has reportedly informed Garoppolo that Trey Lance was their starting quarterback going forward. Garoppolo has taken the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2019 and the NFC Championship in 2021.

The Cleveland Browns stated that quarterback Jacoby Brissett would serve as the backup quarterback and would fill in for Watson if Watson was suspended for 6-8 games. Brissett spoke in April about always preparing like a starting quarterback even when in a backup role.

“I wouldn’t be in the position that I am in today if I worried about (knowing if I was going to start or not). I’ve always prepared myself like a starter. I carry myself like a starter because when those opportunities present themselves, I want to show that I am that. I can’t predict whatever the case may be with the outside the field stuff, but what I know is true is that you’re always one play away. And that’s what I prepare for, and I obviously prepare like I’m the starter, regardless of the situation.”

The National Football League has since appealed Judge Sue L. Robinson’s decision of Deshaun Watson serving a six-game suspension, reportedly seeking to impose an indefinite suspension on the Browns quarterback.
