The Cardinals announced Friday that running backs coach James Saxon has been placed on administrative leave. Saxon was charged back in May with two counts of domestic battery, one of which was a felony, for allegedly assaulting a woman in front of a child, according to court documents.

Coach Kliff Kingsbury said that the Cardinals were made aware of the incident when it occurred, but did not immediately place the running backs coach on administrative leave until the reports were made public.

The Cardinals released this statement:

“We are aware of the incident and notified the NFL as required. The matter is currently under review pursuant to league policies. After consultation with the league office, James has been placed on administrative leave. We will have no further comment pending additional proceedings.”

According to ESPN, the incident allegedly began at a Costco in Indianapolis and continued at the woman’s home. A trial date will be set in late August.

The felony charge carries up to 2 1/2 years in prison if convicted. According to the woman’s probable cause affidavit, Saxon allegedly pushed her several times and caused her to fall into the garage door. She also says, James allegedly yelled, “You got your gun? You might as well just shoot me now!”

Saxon has been an assistant coach in the league for 23 seasons and joined the Cardinals in 2019. He formerly played in the league for several years.
