Tennis star Nick Kyrgios was reportedly fined $14,000 after an upsetting loss to Karen Khachanov in the fourth round of the U.S Open. Kyrgios’ fine comes after he destroyed two tennis rackets following his loss to Khachanov. Sports journalist Sam Street posted a video of Kyrgios smashing the two tennis rackets on Twitter.

After being defeated by Khachanov 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-4, Kyrgios can be seen on video walking over to the chair umpire and shaking his hand. Then proceeded to slam the racket in his hand against the court after he walked over towards his bench and pack up his belongings. Kyrgios then proceeded to pick up his second racket and bash it against the court.

The 27-year-old has accumulated a total of $32,500 in fines at the Grand Slam’s final tournament of 2022. According to reports from Reuters, his fifth offense of slamming rackets on the court of Arthur Ashe Stadium has earned the player the largest fine issued out at the U.S Open this year. When approached by media, Kyrgios described how upset he was over losing and what prompted his anger as “devastated” and that he felt like the match was “either winning it all or nothing at all”.

“I’m just devastated, obviously,” Kyrgios told reporters after the match. “Just feel like it was either winning it all or nothing at all, to be honest. I feel like I’ve just failed at this event right now.”

According to Yahoo Sports, Kyrgios was fined $4,000 for shouting obscenities during his victory over defending U.S Open Champion Daniil Medvedev. Kyrgios was also fined $7,500 for reportedly spitting at his own player’s box in the match prior. Reuters states that the fines will be deducted from Kyrgios’ overall match earnings, which total to $473,000.
