NBA Imposes One-Game Suspension On Grant Williams For Bumping A Game Official

NBA: Boston Celtics at Miami Heat

The first loss of the season for the Boston Celtics was accompanied by high emotions and discipline by the NBA. The league has suspended Celtics forward Grant Williams for one game. Williams was seen “recklessly making contact with and directing inappropriate language toward a game official.”

The incident occurred during the fourth quarter, when the Celtics were on the road taking on the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls were leading 100-82 with less than nine minutes left in regulation. Officials called a blocking foul on Williams as a Bulls player was driving to the rim. As Williams was getting up, Williams was seen bumping into an official. The player received a technical foul from a female official and was ejected from the game as a result.

Commentators claim the bump was incidental contact, as Williams was trying to avoid the official as he was getting up to his feet.

The Celtics will be without Williams when they take on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The team is having its depth tested early, as the status of Robert Williams III is still up in the air. Grant Williams was drafted 22nd overall in the 2019 NBA draft by the Celtics. In the team’s 126-120 win over the Orlando Magic, Williams registered 13 points (3-3 FG, 3-3 3Pt, 4-4 FT), six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 31 minutes.
