Major League Soccer Adds Three Games To Dru Yearwood’s Suspension For Striking A Fan With The Ball

New York Red Bulls midfielder Dru Yearwood has reportedly been suspended an additional three games by Major League Soccer. The increased discipline comes after Yearwood had reportedly kicked a ball into the stands of Red Bull Arena during the game vs Philadelphia Union, and struck a person as a result.

Yearwood attempted to make his way to the fan, but was quickly turned away by a member of the fan’s family. Yearwood later took to social media, offering a public apology for his actions by admitting his emotions had gotten the better of him. He hopes that the fans can forgive him.

“I want to apologize from the bottom of my heart to the fans who were hit by the ball I kicked at Saturday’s match. My emotions got the best of me on this day, and I’ve let down the entire organization and every single New York Red Bulls fan. I hope the fans are OK and they can forgive me.”

Yearwood was already serving a one-game suspension due to receiving a red-card during the game. Now, the midfielder will serve a total of four games and be issued a fine for an undisclosed amount. Yearwood stated that he will fully accept the league’s punishment, and promises not to repeat his mistake.

“I fully accept the suspension from MLS and I can ensure it won’t happen again. I want to sincerely apologize again. Please know that I will continue to work hard to be ready to give my all for this football club when I am again able to contribute on the field. Dru”

The suspension reportedly lasts through the end of the 2022 MLS regular season, with the last game scheduled against Charlotte FC on October 9th. Currently, the New York Red Bulls are ranked in the Eastern Conference. The team is poised to make the MLS Cup Playoffs for the 13th straight season in a row. Its final four games include:

  • September 10 vs. New England Revolution
  • September 17 at New York City FC
  • October 1 at Columbus Crew
  • October 9 vs. Charlotte FC
