Boston Celtics Head Coach Ime Udoka Could Be Out For The Season Following Allegations Of Relationship With Staffer
With the NBA preseason starting September 30th, losing a head coach at this juncture could prove detrimental to any team going forward. The Boston Celtics could be faced with such an outcome following a controversy that went viral on social media Wednesday evening. As ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports, Celtics Head Coach Ime Udoka stands to face disciplinary action from the National Basketball Association after allegedly becoming involved in an intimate relationship with a member of the team’s staff. The discipline is expected to include a significant suspension that could sideline Udoka for the entire 2022-23 NBA season.
Udoka was reportedly involved in a consensual, intimate relationship with a female member of the Celtics staff. Senior Lead NBA Insider Shams Charania states that the relationship is being categorized as a violation of the Celtics’ code of conduct. Officials say that a decision on Udoka’s status could come as early as Thursday.
To further complicate the story, Udoka is engaged to actress Nia Long since 2015. On top of playing the role of Will Smith’s girlfriend-turned-fiancé on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, Long is known for her roles in multiple major 1990s films including Boyz in the Hood (1991) and Love Jones (1997).
Officials say that Udoka’s job as head coach of the Boston Celtics is not yet considered to be at risk. Will Hardy, who was Udoka’s top assistant coach on the team, left the Celtics back in June to pursue a coaching job with the Utah Jazz franchise.
