Former NFL quarterback, and civil rights activist, Colin Kaepernick has launched a new initiative that will be led by five Board-Certified pathologists and offers free secondary autopsies for families of loved ones who have died under “police-related” circumstances. Kaepernick, according to New York Times, stated that this autopsy initiative “is one important step toward ensuring that family members have access to accurate and forensically verifiable information about the cause of death of their loved one in their time of need.”

We’re already seeing this new initiative being called upon from several families, beginning with a family in Milwaukee that recently lost a family member. 20-year old Keishon Thomas was pronounced dead while in police custody approximately 16 hours after he was pulled over for a traffic violation, and subsequently arrested due to having an outstanding warrant as well as being suspected of illegal narcotics. The cause of his death was allegedly due to a “medical emergency”. The family of Keishon Thomas is said to not only be working closely with the autopsy initiative, but also had reportedly begun this process even before the initial autopsy report was released.
