According to Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania, the Brooklyn Nets have zeroed in on Ime Udoka to be the team’s next head coach. Udoka was suspended by the Boston Celtics for a full season for violating team policies. Additionally, Charania says the Celtics have given Udoka its permission to seek another coaching position with another team. Udoka was part of a list of names the Nets were looking into. Reports say that Udoka was allegedly involved in a consensual, intimate relationship with a female member of the Celtics staff, which is prohibited by team policies.

The coach reportedly was engaged to actress Nia Long, who is widely known for her roles in multiple major 1990s films including Boyz in the Hood (1991) and Love Jones (1997), as well as her role as Will Smith’s girlfriend-turned-fiancé on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” ESPN’ Adrian Wojnarowski says assistant coach Jacque Vaughn is filling in as interim head coach of the Nets.

The Nets terminated its contract with former head coach Steve Nash on Tuesday. Nash was seven games into the NBA regular season, following a rocky offseason and struggling to achieve success with the Nets since being hired in 2020. The offseason was headlined by Nets star Kevin Durant issuing an ultimatum to Nets owner Joe Tsai. Durant reportedly was demanding to be traded if the owner did not fire both Nash and General Manager Sean Marks.

Nash released a statement on his firing, thanking the Nets organization and the fans for the time he got to spend with the team. Nash had an illustrious 18-year career in the NBA, where he was an eight-time All-Star and a seven-time All-NBA selection. Nash was also a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player while playing for the Phoenix Suns.
