In the wake of the National Football League’s appeal of Deshaun Watson’s six-game suspension, multiple NFL teams are reportedly “unhappy” with the terms of Watson’s $230 million dollar, fully guaranteed contract.

Watson stands to make just a little over $1 million in base salary for 2022, and a signing bonus totaling $8.9 million. Pending the results of the appeal, Watson only stands to lose around $345,000 for a six game suspension. The Browns’ General Manager Andrew Berry, defended the contract to local media.

“We understand the optics of it. I think for us, after we got comfortable with Deshaun, the contract was really a football decision,” GM Andrew Berry Said. “The things that were important to us from a club perspective were to have Deshaun under contract for another year and to have it structured in a manner that would allow us maximum flexibility to execute the rest of our offseason plan.”

Berry said the structure is very similar to other large player contracts the team has on the books.
