Head Coach Ime Udoka has officially been suspended by the Boston Celtics for a full season for violating team policies. Udoka’s suspension starts immediately. Discussions about the coach’s future with the organization will come later. Udoka was reportedly involved in a consensual, intimate relationship with a female member of the Celtics staff, which is prohibited by team policies. With the NBA preseason starting September 30th, losing a head coach at this juncture could prove detrimental to any team going forward, much less the Celtics who have championship aspirations.

Udoka issued a public apology saying that he has come to terms with the team’s decision. The coach’s fiancé is actress Nia Long and they have been engaged since 2015. Long is widely known for her roles in multiple major 1990s films including Boyz in the Hood (1991) and Love Jones (1997), as well as her role as Will Smith’s girlfriend-turned-fiancé on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

“I want to apologize to our players, fans, the entire Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down. I am sorry for putting the team in this difficult situation, and I accept the team’s decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will have no further comment.”

With his former top assistant coach Will Hardy having moved on to coach the Utah Jazz, assistant coach Joe Mazzulla will be the interim head coach for the 2022-23 NBA season.
