Cain Velasquez, the UFC heavyweight champion, has issued a statement since being jailed.

Velasquez encouraged his Twitter followers on April 29 to donate to RAINN as part of his awareness-raising effort for April’s National Sexual Assault Awareness & Child Abuse Prevention Month (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network).

He added in his statement, “Although I am not at home, I stand to help educate the community and provide resources and information for victims and their families. No one should have to go through sexual abuse and we need to stand up and push for change. Thank you all for your continued love and support.”

Velasquez, 39, is incarcerated in Santa Clara County after reportedly shooting a pistol at suspected child molester Harry Goularte, who allegedly sexually molested a 4-year-old close family member at a childcare center.

Instead, Velasquez is accused of shooting Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, in the shoulder, causing injuries. Velasquez was charged with attempted murder and other offenses.
