The wife of WNBA star Brittney Griner, Cherelle, told AP Sports that a scheduled call between her and Griner did not take place due to US embassy in Moscow not being staffed.

Brittney Griner reportedly attempted contact with the US Embassy in Moscow 11 times over many hours, dialing a number given to her by said embassy, which the pair was promised would then patch the connection through to Cherelle Griner in Phoenix.

The call, however, remained unanswered each time since the desk at the embassy where the phone rung was allegedly unstaffed on Saturday.

The State Department stated on Monday that it was aware of the problem and was investigating it. In May, the State Department had declared Griner wrongfully detained.

On February 17, Griner was apprehended at a Russian airport after investigators discovered cannabis-infused vape cartridges in her baggage.

She has been detained ever since, with her jail time being recently extended until July 3rd.
